A Political Disposition

I've never given politics a second thought outside of choosing who to vote for, but since our first African-American president, I've paid more attention than usual. No, it's not because Obama is the first brother in the house but because people seem to expect more of him than any other president. Obama is not some miracle worker, nor can he fix in his four years what no other president has ever been able to fix. What's worse is the name calling, the accusations, the rock throwing. I always knew politics was not without its shortcomings but get real. No one disliked Bush more than I. I just didn't like the man but it really didn't matter until my son went to Iraq. Even then, I reasoned that my son was only doing his job and Bush was without malice retaliating for a wrong. I didn't like the man but there was no reason for accusations, name calling and rock throwing. What is this world coming to? Grown men, expected to run this country more concerned about one mans birth certificate and racial inclination than the state of the country for which they are appointed to support. It's riduculous. I won't even start on Rush Limbaugh. He gives freedom of speech a bad name. God forbid if Mrs. Obama should support the local JC Penny. What if I refered to Newt Gingrich as a salamander or a lizard just because he's caucasian and I'm not? That would be almost like supporting President Obama because he's half African-American. I am 100% African-American and the American Indian part doesn't even show up. How big is this race thing really? How polical is this presidency? How sad is my political disposition? And what about yours? ..."Really? Seriously? that is so gross". I am going to support my president no matter what. I voted for him for whatever reason and good, bad, or ugly, we're in for the long haul. I'll even consider supporting him if he's not African-American. Notice I said consider, that is to say, I won't bash any other president, but I do reserve the right to deny him or her as my personal choice. I'm glad I can do that without passing licks. Maybe some politicians should try that on for size as well. Maybe then we can be a little more at ease about political dispositions.

2012

I turn 50 this year, you know, the golden age. I'd like this year to be significant, special even, but to date it's just another year in the life of a human. I am expecting another grandchild in late April or early May. I am hopeful. I am blogging again. I am alive therefore I am. I guess that is the blessing I take for granted. I am. Many blessings to everyone for the year 2012. I am and so are you.

Rising Temperatures

After today, the meterologist in NC predict that a heat wave is on the rise. To date, we have enjoyed rather pleasant temperatures, albeit marked by rains, both showers and downpours. Temperatures are expected to reach and surpass 90 degrees.

Looks like this summer may be a hot one. Make sure you stay hydrated and use protection against UV waves. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat. Those people who work outside should also be particularly careful of sun exposure.

Make the most of your summer but please play it safe.

Planting on the Full Moon

Traditionally, the older people in my life plant gardens all throughout the year. Recently, I was informed that the best time to plant is on a full moon which occurs on the May 17. I'm new at gardening, but I'd like to continue a tradition that has been very beneficial to me and my family. There is nothing like stewed garden tomatoes on a cold snowy day in the winter or fresh garden beans. I also love cucumbers and cabbage which are no longer cheap in the grocery stores. Growing your own vegetables not only saves money but it is healthier. I planted cabbage, peppers, and tomatoes on the new moon but I intend to complete my gardening on the full moon. I don't know how significant that will be, but as a beginner, I cherish any tips that give the slightest hint of properity. There is also something very spiritual about growing your own food. I'm enjoying the experience. I can't wait for the results. Happy planting to all.

Scooby Dooby Don't

My Grandson Scooby (Demarion)turned two on April 20, my father turned 75 on April 10. Ironicly, Scooby is either one amazing kid or he's been here before. He acts as if he grew up with my Dad. He and my Dad are best buds. Scooby calls Dad big papa and Dad calls Scooby...Dooby Don't. Why? Because Scooby has always been an individual. His first word was 'auh, auh' which in baby language means yes, no, or maybe so. Long before he turned a year, his response to any question was 'auh, auh'.

Our family are very verbal readers and all children spoke before they walked. Scooby is no different. However, Scooby has a special skill. He mimics others. He is convinced he can read and I'm not so sure he can't. My father and I are avid readers and talkers. My Mom says we talk and read too much but it must be hereditary because so does Scooby. He'll thumb through a newspaper for an hour. He'll hold a book, turning each page and sometimes chuckles as if he's come across something funny. He shops for books. He'll tell you exactly which ones he has read and which ones he hasn't. He'll tell you to put on a jacket or hat before going out side (that he got from me). He'll tell you when you know better. He even tells when his mom, my 19 year old daughter, talks back after I've laid down the law.

People say that because he spends so much time with my dad and I that we greatly influence him. Maybe. Yesterday he asked me to tell him what I was thinking. Like my Dad, he wants to know what's on every ones mind now.
While most kids are running around, playing with little toys, Scooby wants to go fishing and think. I know that's what I do and I'm always saying it but the average two year old does not call me on it. What the average two year old does, Scooby doesn't.

I love my grandson more than anything but sometimes I wondered, is he that amazing or am I just that overwhelmed? The answer is both. Last week after a doctors visit, we got a call from an agency who specializes in "advanced kids". His advanced terminology and language skills got someone's attention. When I asked him why these people wanted to talk to him, he said, "Nana, I don't think they know they ABC's and they 123's, I had to keep telling them." When the doctor asked him if he could read he said, "yep". Then he got the newspaper and showed her the obits. "These people died", he said. Then the comics, "this is funny". Then the want ads, "This is to find a job or a car". They are still chuckling. They suggested we enroll him in daycare to see how he correlates with other 2 yr. olds. He likes it (school), but other 2 yr. olds "don't talk so good". He says he likes talking to Nana and big Papa because we don't talk baby talk. Go figure.

The doctors say that he's definitely not average because what the average 2 year old does, Scooby Dooby don't.
